The Gruesome Twosome
Capt. Wendell Pruitt (73) and Lt. Lee "Buddy" Archer (72) of the 332nd Fighter Group better known as the Tuskegee Airmen, in action on October 12, 1944, over Lake Balaton in Southern Hungry. Lt. Archer shot down three Hungarian Bf 109s in engagements that spanned only 10 minutes. Pruitt and Archer, were the most successful pair of Tuskegee pilots in terms of air victories with Pruitt at 3 and Archer at 4. Both Capt Pruitt and Archer were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, with Pruitt earning 7 oak leaf clusters. Archer survived the war and passed away in 2010, Pruitt along with a student pilot was killed during a stateside training exercise in 1945.
